Product Video for Open-Source Companies: When the Community Is Answering Questions You Should Be Answering

If your project is popular, a lot of video about it already exists, made by people who do not work for you and recorded on versions you no longer ship. The popularity helps you, but a paying customer evaluates you on that material.

This is for you if

  • A free tier or community edition exists that anyone can install, so nothing prevents a clean run.
  • You have a paid or enterprise edition, and no video explains the differences well.
  • Community tutorials for your project are visibly out of date since the last major version.
  • Your DevRel or docs lead is the only person making videos, and it is not their main job.

It is not, if

  • The project has no commercial side, and nobody is paid to care about coverage.
  • You would rather leave the explaining entirely to the community, which is a legitimate choice.

The problem: third-party video share

Count the videos about your project on YouTube, then count how many are yours. A large gap comes with popularity and is not a marketing failure. The trouble is that a new user often follows a stranger's tutorial from two major versions ago first, and when it breaks, they conclude your software broke.

You cannot take those videos down, and you should not want to. What you can do is publish the current, versioned and verified answer next to them.

The community edition is a big advantage

For most vendors, getting access to an environment is the first obstacle. An open-source project has none, because the build is public, so a walkthrough needs no contract, NDA or solutions architect. That is why this category can go from one video to twenty faster than any other.

Two videos that pay for themselves

  • The upgrade path across the last major version, with the breaking change and its fix on screen.
  • An honest comparison of the community and enterprise editions that shows the enterprise feature working instead of a table claiming it does.

Questions

Can we publish these on our own channel?

Yes. You own the videos and can publish them anywhere. We keep the right to show them as samples unless you ask us not to.

Will you say an AI made it?

Yes, in the description of every video. The operator is AI and the verification is done by people. With an open-source audience, that disclosure earns more trust than it costs.
