What Is Video Personalization? Meaning, the Methods, and Its Limit for Product Demos

Video personalization is the practice of producing a different version of a video for each viewer or account by inserting their details, such as a name, company, logo or figures from their data, into the picture, the narration or the sequence of scenes. It ranges from a name on a title card to a demo whose screens show the prospect's own data.

The methods

Five ways to personalise a video.
MethodHow it works
Variables in textA name or company inserted into titles, captions or an interactive demo's screens.
Generated narrationA cloned or synthetic voice reading a script with the viewer's details in it.
BranchingA different sequence of scenes depending on the viewer's role or answers.
Data-driven screensAn interactive demo or a rendered video whose charts and tables show the account's numbers.
One-to-one recordingA person records a short video for one prospect, by hand.

The interactive demo platforms do the first and fourth at scale; our comparison of interactive demo software lists which ones offer personalisation tokens and on which plans.

Five video personalization methods, from variables in text to one-to-one recording, beside what none of them can personalise: whether the product works, since the task shown was still recorded once.
Personalisation makes a demo more relevant; it does not make it more evidence.

What it is good for

Attention and relevance at the top of a sales conversation. A prospect who sees their own company name in the first second keeps watching, and a demo that shows their kind of data is easier to imagine using. For outreach and for sales rooms, personalisation earns its cost.

What it cannot personalise

Whether the product works. Inserting a logo into a captured screen does not run the product for that account; the task shown is still the one recorded once, on one version, with a rehearsed outcome. A personalised demo is a more relevant claim, not more evidence. For the evaluation stage, what a prospect needs is the task they care about run for real, which is a verified walkthrough, and a sample run on their own product does more than a thousand name insertions. One demo, five markets covers the related case of one run adapted per language rather than per viewer.

Privacy

Personalised video carries personal data by definition. The viewer's name in a URL, a logo fetched from their domain, a tracking pixel in the player: each one is a disclosure obligation, and in Europe a lawful basis. Keep the data in the page, not the link, and say what the video collects.

Questions

What is personalized video marketing?

Sending each viewer a version of a video that includes their own details, such as their name, company or data, to make it more relevant and more likely to be watched.

How is video personalized at scale?

With variables inserted into text and screens, generated narration that reads the viewer's details, and branching that changes the sequence by role. Interactive demo platforms do most of this from one recording.

Does a personalized demo prove the product works?

No. The task shown was recorded once on one version with a rehearsed outcome; personalisation changes the labels, not the run. Proof needs the task run for real.

Is video personalization a privacy issue?

It processes personal data, so yes. Keep the viewer's details out of URLs, say what the player collects, and in Europe have a lawful basis for it.
