What Is a Promo Video? Promotional Video Meaning, Length, and What It Cannot Do

A promo video, short for promotional video, is a brief video made to raise awareness of a product, release, offer or event and to move the viewer to one next step, such as visiting a page or starting a trial. It sells the reason to look; it is not the place where the product is shown doing its job.

What a promo video is for

Attention and one action. A launch, a new version, a trade show, a webinar, a sample offer. It runs where people are not yet looking for you, which means a feed, an ad slot or the top of a landing page, and it has to work with the sound off and in the first few seconds. Our channel explainer why companies need promotion videos argues the case in two minutes: the product video file alone does nothing until something sends people to it.

What goes in one

  • One idea. A promo that promotes three things promotes none.
  • The real product on screen, at least once, so the viewer knows what they are being sent to.
  • A reason now: the release date, the event, the offer.
  • One next step, said and shown.
A promo video reaching people in a feed or ad slot with one idea, the real product, a reason now and one next step, then sending a click to a how-to video or verified walkthrough that can be checked.
The promo earns the click; the page it lands on has to carry the proof.

What it cannot do

A promo video makes a claim and asks for a click. It cannot carry the version, the prerequisites, the result or the failure that make a software video believable, because there is no room and that is not its job. The honest promo is the one whose click lands on something that can be checked: a how-to video for the feature it promotes, or a verified walkthrough of the task it hints at. The library piece the buyer decided before the demo is about what happens when the promo is the only video there is.

Promo video versus explainer

An explainer video explains what the product is to someone who has arrived. A promo video gets them to arrive. The two are often confused because both are short, and the result is a promo that explains too much and an explainer that shouts. Video marketing campaign for a product release shows how the two sit in sequence around a launch.

Questions

What is the purpose of a promotional video?

To raise awareness of a product, release or event among people who were not looking for it, and to move them to one next step.

How long should a promo video be?

Short enough to work in a feed with the sound off. Length is set by where it runs, not by how much there is to say; the saying happens on the page it links to.

What is the difference between a promo video and a product demo?

A promo gets attention and asks for a click. A demo shows the product doing something. A promo that tries to demo is too long for a feed and too thin to be checked.

Should a promo video show the real product?

Yes, at least once, so the viewer knows what they are being sent to. A promo built only from stock and animation leaves them guessing.
