What Is a Product Demo Video? Definition, Types, and What Separates a Demo From Proof
A product demo video is a recorded demonstration of a product in use, showing its main features and tasks on screen so a prospect can see what it does before trying or buying it. It sits between an explainer, which only describes, and a walkthrough, which records one real task including what went wrong.
Types of product demo video
| Type | What it shows | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Overview demo | The main features in a few minutes | The website |
| Feature demo | One capability | Usually a release or a landing page |
| Recorded sales demo | A real call or a rehearsed version of it | Prospects who missed the live one |
| Interactive demo | A clickable capture of the interface rather than a video | Compared in interactive demo software compared |
| Technical or software demo | The product doing a real job, with terminal or logs on screen | Evaluators |
What a good one contains
- A task, not a tour. "Restore a VM from last night's backup" holds attention; "here is the dashboard" does not.
- The real interface, on a stated version.
- A result the viewer can see, at a moment they can name.
- A pace that can be followed, with the cursor visible and zooms on the small controls.
- Written steps and a link to the docs beside it.
Demo versus proof
A demo is performed by someone who already knows the answer, on a path rehearsed to succeed. Nothing in it is false, and it proves little, because the one thing an evaluator wants to know, whether the task works on their kind of setup, is exactly what a rehearsal removes. A verified walkthrough keeps the version, the evidence and the failed attempt, which is the difference between "it can be done" and "it was done, here". The Proxmox VE 9.2 install is the worked example.
Making demo videos at scale
The hard part is not the first demo but the fortieth, and the re-recording after each release. Our comparison of screen recorders for software demos covers the tools, and stop repeating the same demo covers why sales teams end up recording the same one by hand.
Questions
What is the difference between a product demo and a product video?
A product video is any video about the product, including explainers and ads. A product demo shows the product in use on screen.
How long should a product demo video be?
As long as the task it shows. An overview demo for a website stays short; a technical demo runs until the result is on screen.
Can a product demo be AI-generated?
Not honestly. A generated video shows an invented interface and an invented result. Demos are recordings of the real product, or they are animation.
What makes a demo video believable?
A stated version, a result the viewer can see, a pace that can be followed, and ideally the moment something did not work the first time.
See one, with its run log and the attempts that failed.
