Turn a Website Into a Product Demo Video: What a URL Can Give You, and What It Cannot
A URL gives a video tool your marketing copy, screenshots and colours. It does not give it the product behind the login, the task or a result. The three things people mean by turning a website into a demo video, what each one makes, and what to send with the URL when the product has to be shown working.
When people ask how to turn a website into a product demo video, they usually mean one of three different things, and each produces a different video. A URL-to-video generator reads the page and makes a promo from it. A screen recording of the site tours the public pages. Neither shows the product doing a job, because for most software the product is not on the website. It is behind a login. This page separates the three, says what each is good for, and lists what to send with the URL when the video has to show the product working.
Three things "website to video" can mean
| What you get | What it reads | What it shows | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A URL-to-video generator | The page's text, images and colours | Your claims, rearranged as scenes | A promo or social clip about the brand |
| A recording of the public site | The pages anyone can open | Navigation, pricing, the sign-up form | Products that are the website, such as a public tool or a shop |
| The product behind the URL, operated | A trial or demo account and one task | The product doing that task, with the result on screen | A demo for buyers and evaluators |
What a URL-to-video generator makes from your homepage
A generator reads what the page says: the headline, the feature list, the images and the brand colours. It writes a script from them, picks scenes and renders a short video. The result can be a decent brand or promo clip, and it is fast. What it cannot do is show anything the page does not contain, and the page contains claims. A video built from "set up in minutes" restates "set up in minutes". It does not set anything up. Our comparison of AI video generators for product marketing covers where these tools help and where they stop.
Our own free AI video maker is this kind of tool, and says so. You describe the brand, it writes a six-scene storyboard and renders a brand video. It does not show the product, and it does not pretend to.
Why the website is not the product
For most SaaS products the website is the shop window. The product sits behind a login, it needs an account with data in it, and the interesting part is a task: connecting an integration, running a report, restoring a backup. None of that is reachable from the URL. A tool that only has the URL can show the window, not the shop.
It also ages differently. A marketing page changes when marketing changes it. The product changes with every release, and a demo has to say which version it was recorded on, which a homepage never does. The product demo video page sets out what a demo has to contain to count as one.
Can AI make a product demo video without screen recording?
Not honestly, if a demo means the product shown working. Without a recording of the real interface, a generator has to invent the screens, and an invented interface with an invented result is animation. That is fine for an explainer, as long as it is labelled as one. What AI can do honestly is operate the real product and record it. That is how our walkthroughs are made: an AI operator performs the task on the real product, on camera, and a person checks the result against the product's own evidence before anything is published. The verified walkthrough page explains the check, and the Proxmox VE 9.2 install is a finished one.
What to send with the URL when you want the product shown
If the goal is a demo rather than a promo, the URL is the first line of the brief, not the whole brief. Send these with it.
| Send | Why |
|---|---|
| The product URL | Where the product and its docs live |
| One task, in one sentence, with a finish line | "Show the features" never finishes. "Send a client their first invoice" does |
| A trial or demo environment | The task has to run somewhere, and never on production |
| The docs page for that task | What the product says should happen, to check the result against |
| The version | So the video can say which build it shows |
| The languages you need | Captions and narration can be made per language from the same recording |
Our one-sentence brief is the second line as a form. If you are recording the task yourself, the software demo script template covers the rest.
Which one should you make first?
If you have no video at all and need something on the homepage this week, a generated brand clip is a reasonable start, as long as nobody mistakes it for proof. If buyers are evaluating, or sales keeps giving the same demo by hand, start with one recorded task instead. Stop making your best engineer give the same demo makes that case in a minute. The two are not rivals: the clip says what the product is, and the demo shows it working. Product demo video vs explainer video covers how they fit together.
How do I turn my website into a video?
Paste the URL into a URL-to-video generator and you get a promo built from the page's words and images. For a video of the product itself you need access to the product and a task to perform. The URL alone does not reach it.
Can a URL-to-video tool make a SaaS demo?
It can make a video about the SaaS from its marketing page. It cannot log in, so it cannot show the product doing a task. Any interface it shows is a screenshot from the page or an invented screen.
What is the fastest way to get a real demo from a product URL?
Send the URL with one task and a trial account to someone who will operate it, or record the task yourself. Our sample works this way: one product and one task, a reply within one business day and the sample in two.
Send the URL and one task. We operate the product behind it, keep what failed, and send the video with its log. The first sample is free.
